Melon
Boasts high sugar content and can keep for a long time
Melons are produced on the Byobuzan sandhills of Tsugaru city, Aomori. Sandhills are suited to melon cultivation because of the good drainage and temperature disparity between day and night, yielding sweet delicious melons. Cultivated in open-fields, melons in Aomori are rain-protected by tunnel production. Aomori is the fifth largest melon producer in Japan. The peak season for Aomori melons is August.
The major variety, “Takami” melons are known for having pale green flesh that is thick and crisp. They keep longer than average and have an exceptionally high sugar content (16g of sugar/100g of fruit).
